This gothic basilica was begun by the Franciscans Friars at the end of the XIII century, in order to house the Christian community living in this quarter along the Arno river.
According to the tradition since the Middle Age the inhabitants of this area have been buried here.
Actually this church is known as the Pantheon of the Italian glories because it served as burial place for many illustrious Italians such as Michelangelo and Galileo Galilei. The church preserves several interesting works of art, including the frescos painted by Giotto and the main chapel frescoed by Agnolo Gaddi.
